The Var is a department of the region PACA ( Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur ), it is bordering the departments of the Bouches du Rhône, the Vaucluse, the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, the Alpes-Maritimes, the limit formed by the Massif of the Estérel , as well as by the Mediterranean Sea in the South.
Its surface is 6032 km2 with 420 km of coast.
The Var is a department which 56 % of its surface is afforested (341 000 Ha). It is formed by a relief consisted of two geologically different parts : the limestone part on the axis Toulon-Draguignan and the crystalline part in the East.
Its main coastal massifs are :
The Maures and the Estérel
The Massif of the Sainte-Baume
The mountain of the Lachens (highest point of the department),
Plan of Canjuers and the plateau of the Siou Blanc.
Its Mediterranean climate makes of the Var a department been used to the strong hot season.
The main cultures are dedicated to the productions such as flowers, fruits, primeur and wine.
The Var is an important tourist destination. The tourists can visit cellars and vineyards of Bandol, visit villages perched such as Fayence, Montauroux, Callian, Seillans, Tourettes, Saint Paul en Forêt, Mons and Tanneron, to make hikes in the Massif of the Estérel , to practise windsurfer on the peninsula of Giens, to take a boat to reach the island of Porquerolles or the submarine nature reserve or the island of Port-Cros.
The longest sandy beach of the coast is the one of Cavalaire on Sea.
In the North of the Var you will find the Haut-Var with its villages perched in hills as well as majestic sites of the Georges of the Verdon and the lake of Sainte Croix. In the southeast of the department you will find the lake of Saint Cassien.
